The Start of a Journey
Around two weeks ago, we got to see the iPad get a hint at a new life, in the form of iPadOS 26. That made me wonder if this could spark a revival of my usage of my iPad.
I’ve used the iPad for many years, but I think when the Pro models started appearing, that’s when I took them more seriously. My first Pro was the 10.5” one, which I loved, followed by my current iPad which is the 5th generation 12.9” iPad Pro that was released back in 2021. While I do love the form factor of the iPad, it was the software that slowly drove me away.
I’m a software engineer as a day job, and in my personal time I’m also a bit of a general tinkerer, so for those tasks macOS has always been my home. The terminal and other coding tools were a big part of that. The iPad just isn’t the same as using a Mac.
But now I’m a father, I have less time for that stuff outside of work. I still write for my blog, albeit in bursts, I watch entertainment, read, and countless other things that the iPad is great for.
Pair that with the upcoming iPadOS 26 update, bringing many sought after features. Namely, a significantly better windowing system, in-app menu bar, better support for background tasks, and a general feel that it’s moving towards being a real computer. It feels like a good time to start myself on a new journey of using my iPad as my computer.
